Walking Towards Ithaca

Ithaca Promo Image Small

My new solo piece, Walking Towards Ithaca, will be part of Hull Truck’s Grow Season.

It combines the story of a 200-mile walk across Britain at a time of deep political conflict with reflections on Homer’s Odyssey. .

Blurring the boundaries between documentary, autobiography and myth, it’s a show that reflects on the complexities of human connection and belonging in world of anger and alienation.

Training for Immersive, Interactive and Participatory Performance

Screen Shot 2018-06-18 at 18.13.45

I am proud to announce the publication of  a special issue of Theatre, Dance and Performance Training that I’ve edited.  The issue looks at the ways in which performance training has responded to rise of interactive, immersive and participatory aesthetics in performance.  It includes an article that I’ve written about connecting techniques associated with the Stanislavskian tradition of acting to the aesthetics of live art and interactive performance.

Excavating Titus Andronicus

DSC_8319

An image of Kelsey Burns and me during research and development at NYU in the spring.  The project was looking at the how we might use somatic practices and contemporary performance aesthetics to stage/adapt/appropriate Titus Andronicus. I’m excited to say that I’ll be developing this work further with Christian Billing in 2018 at the University of Hull.  We’re making a mash up of Ovid, Titus and Hecuba to present to the esteemed folk from Theatre Without Borders.

The Violent Justice in Our Hearts on Resonance 104.4FM

Over the last few weeks I’ve been adapting my theatre piece about rage, justice and terrorism, The Violent Justice in Our Hearts, for the wonderful Resonance 104.4FM (available online for those of us outside London).  The programme has been produced by Nicholas Edwards-Longstaff.  It will be on at 8pm on Wendesday 2nd March.

The piece is part of an ongoing creative attempt to link autobiographical storytelling with documentary and essay forms. My aim is to bring intimacy to the exploration of complex political and social issues.  I hope it works for you.

Sharing experiences of life after stroke

I went to meet with a Stroke Association Communication Support Group this week – talking about what life is like after stroke.  It was pretty humbling.  The conversation was the first stage of a project that seeks to find ways of representing some of those experiences using storytelling, dance and music.   I will be collaborating with the saxophonist Jesse Bannister and the dancer Annika Kompart.

There will be a presentation of work in development in the Donald Roy Theatre at the University of Hull on April 21st at 7:30pm.  It will be followed by a discussion with the audience and stake-holders.

This project is kindly supported by the Ferens Educational Trust.

The Violent Justice in Our Hearts @ Hull Truck

Violent Justice Image

I was pleased (and nervous) to present the first draft my new piece, The Violent Justice in Our Hearts, in the Hull Truck rehearsal room on Wednesday.  I got some lovely and helpful feedback from the game and sympathetic crew that came to watch.  Very much looking forward to presenting the finished item at the Grow Festival in June.  Slightly panicking about having to learn 6000 words – even if I did write them.

The Surfaces of Understanding @ Ferens Art Gallery in Hull

On Wednesday (7th January 2015) I’m installing my new piece The Surfaces of Understanding at the Ferens Art Gallery. It is a 3D audio video piece presenting an integrated portrait of five different people. It will be in the foyer of the Live Art Space and is free.

Skin and facial health therapist Dr Katerina Steventon has provided an accompanying guide to the piece which encourages participants to make links between the installation and other works in the Ferens’ collection.

Being Human Festival Starts Today!

Roving Soul Arcades Photo Web

The Being Human Festival starts today. My piece, A Roving Soul: Walking the City with Walter Benjamin, is the University of Hull’s contribution. It’s a loose adaptation of Walter Benjamin’s The Arcades Project, inviting you to put on headphones and take a walk through urban space. It asks you to look at the city through Benjamin’s eyes and become the roving soul expressed in his philosophy.

Download the file here, get some headphones and get walking! https://itunes.apple.com/gb/podcast/roving-soul-university-hull/id940073753?mt=2

Thanks to the University of Hull, the School of Advanced, Study, University of London, the Arts and Humanities Research Council and the British Academy.

The Surfaces of Understanding

I was happy to present my new immersive video piece at the Thinking With John Berger conference in Cardiff this week. I got some lovely feedback – including a spontaneous hug. This is the start of a longer term project looking at virtual reality technology and the representation of subjectivity. I am looking forward to installing the piece in the Ferens Art Gallery in Hull at the start of 2015.
